Dr. Alexandre R. Lenz holds a B.Sc. in Computer Science from Universidade Luterana do Brasil (2007), an M.Sc. in Computer Science from Universidade Federal do Paraná (2009), and a Ph.D. in Biotechnology from Universidade de Caxias do Sul (2020), including a doctoral research exchange at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), IIMAS Academic Unit, Mérida, Mexico.
He is Associate Professor in the Bachelor’s Program in Information Systems at Bahia State University (UNEB), Brazil, and founder of the UNEB Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Research Group (G2BC). His research focuses on fungal bioinformatics, with expertise in genome assembly and annotation, comparative and evolutionary genomics, gene regulation, and the discovery of bioactive natural products from fungi.
From August 2026 to March 2027, he will undertake a research mobility project at the FUNGAGE Lab, Uppsala University, Sweden, investigating horizontal gene transfer and its role in fungal genome evolution and adaptation.
He has contributed to fungal taxonomy, including the description of a new filamentous species of Penicillium based on specimens from Brazil and South Korea. His research encompasses ascomycete and basidiomycete fungi, integrating computational genomics, phylogenetics, evolution, and natural-product bioprospecting.
